Meet the Teacher
Dear Parents,
My name is Kristen Oertzen. Many people ask how to pronounce my name. If you don’t pronounce the “O”, you’ve got it. It’s my German husband’s fault for giving me such a name :). As for my teaching experience, I have been teaching First grade for 8 years. I began teaching in Lawrenceville, Ga for four years before moving here to Peachtree for the past four. I love teaching first grade! The excitement and spark in their eyes students get when the “light bulb” comes on, is thrilling and is the reason I keep teaching.
As a first grade teacher, I am committed to learning the best way to instruct my students in all subject areas. That is why, throughout my teaching career, I have been involved in many summer staff developments, attended a National Council for Teachers of Mathematics conference, earned my Masters degree, was trained in Literacy Lessons/ Reading Recovery, and am currently working on my Specialist degree. I was awarded the title, “Reading Teacher of the Year” for Gwinnett County in the 2010-2011 school year due to the intense Literacy Lessons training in combination with teaching fulltime. Just like the expectations I set for my students, I also set high expectations for myself.
I am a big proponent for collaboration. I believe students learn best when they understand that their teacher and their parents/guardians are on the “same team” to help them be the best learners they can be. Please feel free to write me an email or send a note at any time if you have any questions or concerns. I look forward to working with you and learning from and with your students. I am excited to see the growth your students will have in my class this year!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Oertzen
